Violence Against Women

Even after the Maria da Penha Law was created in Brazil, women still suffering with domestic violence. According to a research realized by the Avon Institute in 2014, 3 in 5 women already suffered some kind of violence in a relationship, and 56% of men admitted that committed some kind of aggression. Domestic violence is not only physical aggression but also sexual, physiological, moral, and patrimonial is.


These are some of the types considered domestic violence in Brazil:

  • Humiliate, call names, or lower self-esteem
Lower self-esteem, call names, and humiliate a woman in public is considered a type of emotional violence.

  • Gaslighting

Manipulate or question their own sanity.


  • Control or oppress a woman

The obsessive behavior of a man upon a woman. Control her actions, isolate her from her family and friends, control her social life.
  • Expose her personal life
Talk about their personal life as a couple or expose personal pictures.

  • Throwing objects, shaking and squeezing arms
The attempt of throwing objects with the intention of hurting, shaking or holding with force.

  • Break her personal objects
Damage or break her objects with purpose is one type of patrimonial violence.
