5 Young Feminists To Be Inspired By

Most of us associate the word 'feminist' with a college girl (and she majors in some kind of art). However, these girls are here to break the stereotype. Race, sexuality, sex, gender, size or even age don't matter when you are willing to fight for what you believe in. Here are five teenage girls who are done with institutionalized oppression:

  • Rowan Blanchard (14)
Fourteen (yes, fourteen) year old Rowan Blanchard plays the main role in 'Girl Meets World', a spin-off of 'Boy Meets World'. Rowan is white and cisgender, however is continuously advocating for black women's and trans women's rights. She is the perfect example of how true, intersectional feminism goes beyond gender and race borders, and how it's never to early to get involved in activism. Rowan is, according to TIME Magazine, between the 30 most influential teens worldwide and Feminist Celebrity of the Year' by Ms. Foundation for Women. You can follow her on Twitter at @RowBlanchard and on Instagram at @RowanBlanchard.
  • Amandla Stenberg (17)
Best know as Hunger Games' beloved 'Rue', Amandla is a very proud African-American girl. Stenberg is not only an actress, but she's also a musician and a model. She has, like Rowan, been named 'Feminist Celebrity of the Year' by Ms. Foundation for Women and one of 'The 30 Most Influential Teens of 2015' by TIME Magazine. Her feminism is undeniably intersectional, and her perspectives of black women's place in society have personally affect me greatly. Her Instagram is and her Twitter are @AmandlaStenberg. Her Tumblr username is simply @Amandla .
  • Alexis Isabel Moncada (17)
For 'Lexi4Prez', her popular name, everything started on Twitter. Before her 81.1k followers, Lexi was just a girl who was passionate about feminism and, more specifically, latina women's rights. due to her ethnicity. As she got involved with the Twitter community, her passion for feminism grew. Today, Alexis has her own website, feministculture.com , which has many devoted writes and regular updates. As of this weekend, Moncada started her journey to pass a bill in Washington D.C. She was mentioned in '13 Times Amazing Women Ran the World in 2015', an article by MTV and has had her article 'Dear Presidential Candidates, My Generation Is Ready For You. Are You Ready For Us?' published on their website. Her Instagram is @AlexisIsabel and her Twitter @Lexi4Prez .
  • Malala Yousafzai (18)
Escaped the Taliban, ran away from child marriage in search of education, and was the youngest person to ever win a Nobel Prize, and not afraid to speak up for girls' education worldwide. Need I say more? She is still a target of the Taliban, but her motivation and, above all, indignation, keep her going. Her project's Twitter and Instagram are both @MalalaFund.
  • Sonita Alizadeh (19)
To conclude our list, Sonita Alizadeh, an Afghan rapper who first came into the media's attention when she released her song 'Brides for Sale', criticizing child marriage in her country and in other underdeveloped places. Sonita, much like Malala Yousafzai, was almost sold to a man at a young age. She brought attention to her situation by singing about it. You can follow her Twitter at @SonitaAlizadeh and her official website is http://www.sonita.org/.
